About the course08/05/2025
Superficial fungal infections of the skin, mostly benign, affect one billion people worldwide every year, and are the source of repeated consultations and treatments. Invasive mycoses, on the other hand, are highly fatal. For example, cryptococcosis, histoplasmosis and Talaromyces marneffei infection are major causes of mortality, particularly in HIV patients. Candida spp. septicemia and invasive or chronic aspergillosis are responsible for a mortality rate of over 30%, particularly in immunocompromised patients, whatever the cause, and in hospitalized patients. They are among the most serious opportunistic diseases. Fungal infections therefore constitute a major public health problem, and are the focus of WHO initiatives.
