About the course

Where do we come from? What was the migratory history of our species? What role does the Neanderthal genome play in our current genetic heritage? How has our species adapted to different environments?

Discover genetics' answers to these questions in the online course Human Populations and Evolutionary Genetics. This Institut Pasteur course aims to provide a basic understanding of population genetics and how genetics can help in the study of human migration and adaptation to extreme conditions.
The abundance of genomic data, more than 20 years after the initial sequencing of the human genome, has considerably enriched our understanding of human genetic diversity, global demographics and the interbreeding of populations.

Here are 5 important reasons to take this MOOC:

#1 - Understand population genetics and discover the diversity of the human genome

#2 - Discover the factors responsible for genetic diversity: mutations, recombination, interbreeding, natural selection, genetic drift, etc.

#3 - Describe the genetic history of our species, tracing its migrations across 5 continents

#4 - Identify how humans have adapted to a wide variety of environments, such as living at high altitudes in mountainous regions

#5 - Discuss the importance of the Neanderthal genome in our genetic heritage

Around 1-2% of the genome of modern non-Africans is inherited from Neanderthals, for example genes linked to immune responses have been identified as having a Neanderthal origin.
