What you will learn

At the end of this course, you will be able to:

  • orientate and move the ultrasound probe to obtain an image of the pregnancy
  • obtain an overview of the whole pregnancy
  • modify the settings on the ultrasound machine to improve the quality of the image
  • evaluate the number of fetuses, the fetal position and fetal heartbeat
  • determine the position of the placenta and the quantity of amniotic fluid

Description

This MOOC offers a course in the essential first steps in obstetric ultrasound. Its aim is to help you understand how an ultrasound machine works and to introduce you to the 5 key elements of obstetric ultrasound.

Ultrasound plays a central role in monitoring pregnant women. Ultrasound machines are becoming more affordable, smaller and therefore more accessible to different communities worldwide, even in the most remote areas. Moreover, basic knowledge of ultrasound in pregnancy can save the life of a mother or baby. 

This course is taught by two experts in prenatal ultrasound from the Maternité Port Royal hospital in Paris, France.

Format

The course is self-paced and comprises of 6 videos of between about 5 and 10 minutes long each. There are 30 multiple choice questions to help reinforce your knowledge. If you complete all 30 questions and score over 50% you will be eligible to download the FUN digital badge.

Prerequisites

There are no prerequisites but this course is aimed at people who work in women's healthcare and who are interested in learning the first steps in prenatal ultrasound.

Required Equipment

No equipment is required but access to an ultrasound machine will make the course more relevant.

Assessment and certification

A digital badge is available for candidates obtaining more than 50% on the multiple choice questions.

Accessibility

The videos are dubbed into English and are available for download. The transcription of each video is available to download along with a PDF of the slides used to make the video.

  • Module 1: Installation and probe handling
  • Module 2: Obtaining an overview of the pregnancy
  • Module 3: Basic ultrasound settings
  • Module 4: The 5 key elements: (1) the position of the foetus, (2) the number of fetuses, (3) the fetal heartbeat
  • Module 5: The 5 key elements: (4) the placenta
  • Module 6: The 5 key elements: (5) the quantity of amniotic fluid
